Minor League Round Up - 7/26

Indianapolis Indians: 53-51

Indianapolis beat Charlotte tonight by a score of 8-5. Lefty Brian Burres got the start and got the win going 7 innings allowing 3 runs to score while striking out 5 and walking 3.

Brandon Moss continued his tear going 3-3 with a double getting rbi number 63. Alex Presley went 2-5 with a solo home run which was his 4th in Indy and 10th total this year. Aki Iwamura went 2-5, Jonathan Van Every went 2-3 with two rbi's and Brian Friday went 2-4 with two doubles.

Per Scott McCauley there was a fresh face in the clubhouse tonight but no official word on who it was. Here's to hoping it's Rudy Owens.

Altoona Curve: 59-42

Altoona beat Erie tonight by a score of 11-2. The game was dead locked at two a piece before Altoona mustered up 9 runs in the 8th inning alone. Jeff Locke got the start and was very impressive going 6 innings allowing 2 earned runs while striking out 9 Sea Wolves without allowing a walk. Sadly Locke was not able to pick up the win. Ramon Aguero got the win going 2 innings while Mike Colla shut it down in the 9th.

Chase d'Arnaud went 1-4 with 2 runs scored. Miles Durham went 1-5 with a home run and 4 rbi's and Yung Chi Chen went 2-4 with his first home run of the season and 3 rbi's. Matt Hague was 1-5 with an rbi. Kris Watts, Anthony Norman and Brandon Jones also collected two hits a piece.

Bradenton Marauders: 55-44

Off Today

West Virginia Power: 43-57

West Virginia split a double header with Hagerstown. Game one featured Brett Lorin on the mound going 4 innings allowing 2 earned runs. The win was picked up by Eliecer Navarro who closed out the final 3 innings allowing 2 earned runs as well. Game two was a forgettable one for Quinton Miller who only lasted 2/3 of an inning allowing 7 runs, all earned while striking out one. Mike Williams was solid in relief going 4.1 innings allowing 2 earned runs striking out one. Maurice Bankston finished off the game pitching one inning and walking one.

In Game one, Jarek Cunningham went 1-4 with a run scored. Jose Hernandez hit his 9th home run of the season and Rogelios Noris hit his 13th home run of the season. In game two West Virginia was held to 5 total hits with no player having a multi hit game. David Rubinstein, Rogelios Noris, Jesus Brito, Jairo Marquez and Elevys Gonzalez collected those 5 hits with one a piece.

State College Spikes: 20-18

State College finished the sweep of Mahoning Valley with a 6-4 win. Starter Zack Von Rosenberg pitched 4 solid innings without allowing a run while striking out 3. Zack Dodson in relief of ZVR pitched 2.2 innings picking up the win allowing one unearned run striking out one but allowing 4 free passes.

3rd round pick Mel Rojas went 2-5 with a double and an rbi. Matt Curry, after an 0-4 game last night responded with a 3-3 outing scoring a run along the way. Cole White in his 11th game back from returning from the military went 3-3 with 3 rbi and a run scored. Gift Ngoepe went 0-3 with 2 walks. Gift is hitting .351 in his last 10 and has brought his season average up to .280 with a blistering .416 obp.

Neil Walker is Human

The Pirates lost today to the Padres 5-3 marking their second consecutive loss.

The bats were almost completely silent tonight at the hand of Padres starter Kevin Correia who moved to 7-6 on the season. The top 4 in the Pirates order went a combine 1-12 with 3 walks, the lone hit coming from Jose Tabata. Tabata also had and rbi when he grounded out allowing Ronny Cedeno to score from third. The only player with a multi-hit game was Pedro Alvarez who went 2-4 bring him to .259 on the season. It's nice to see that even in between power surges that Alvarez is putting balls in play and getting some base hits. Lastings Milledge provided a 2 rbi single which was his only hit of the game. Cedeno went 1-4 and the last hit to round things off was a solid line drive single by Paul Maholm.

Maholm coming off his tremendous start against the Astros in which he pitched a complete game shut out was a bit rusty in the second inning and that cost him. However, who knows what would have happened if Tabata wouldn't have misplayed the first hit of the inning, a triple, and caught the ball to make the first out. Maholm settled pitching 6 innings allowing 4 runs, all earned while striking out and walking two batters. Brendan Donnelly was next in line to come into the game and there aren't any words to describe his performance. Donnelly threw a total of 14 pitches in the 7th inning. ONE for a strike! Donnelly walked the bases loaded and was held without further damage when pulled for DJ Carrasco. Carrasco was able to limit the damage to run one which was definitely needed after Donnelly's botched performance. Sean Gallagher finished off the game against his old team pitching two innings with out allowing a hit striking out and walking two batters.

The loss drops the Pirates to 34-62 (23-24 at home) and 4-4 post all-star break.

Is this Christmas in July?

The Young Bucs were at it again today! The Pirates beat the Pirates 15-3 behind Pedro Alvarez's two more home runs and Delwyn Young's career high 5 RBI night. Pedro Alvarez seems to be a man on a mission and must I say Harold Reynolds needs to do a little more research before he interviews a player.

"So Pedro, What's with all this power? You're a line drive guy, only supposed to be hitting 10 home runs."

Yes. That was Harold Reynolds thinking Pedro only has 10 home run potential... Words can't even describe that statement.

Other than Pedro and Delwyn's huge nights the offense was yet again led by lead off man Jose Tabata going 2-4 with 3 runs. Neil Walker continues his tear as well going 2-5 with 2 RBI's. In Tabata's last 5 games he's hitting 8-23 which is a solid .348 clip. Walker has been even more impressive going 14-24 which is .583! The other runs were driven in by Lastings Milledge, Ronny Cedeno and... wait for it... ANDY LAROCHE! Ronny Cedeno sporting his new batting stance is hitting .384 over his last 5 games jumping his season average to almost .250.

Unlike yesterday the starting pitching was quite solid. Zack Duke in his second start off the DL went 6 strong innings allowing 3 runs (2 earned) striking out 3 and walking 2. It was a great site to see Zack back in control, hopefully he can continue this and provide solid starts for the rest of the season. Brendan Donnelly pitched a perfect 7th inning striking out 2 while Sean Gallagher finished off the game allowing one hit while striking out one.

It was definitely a great game overall, a couple of errors but nothing that really hurt the Bucs. Ryan Doumit left the game early after a collision that left him light headed. Doumit was taken to the hospital but there hasn't been any news of his condition yet. The Pirates move to 34-60 (23-22 at home) and 4-2 post all-star break.

I Think We Started That Game With 8 On The Field

First of all lets just get this out of the way. It was an absolute HUGE night for the Rookies, Pedro went deep twice including his first career grand slam. Neil went 5-5, first time a Pirates rookie had 5 hits in a game since John Wehner. Jose even got into it with a rbi double.

Other notables include DY with a solid 2-3 game as well as Lastings Milledge going 1-3 keeping his bat going. Pedro has been able to jump his season average up to almost .250 and after the last two games, his walk percentage per plate appearance is now almost at 10% which means hes learning and with learning comes success and with Pedro we're all hoping for a lot of success. Neil looked in rhythm all night and thats what I love to see. Walkers season average is up to .311 with his OPS being just over .800, I would like to see Walker walking a little bit more but going 5-5 is just as pleasant to see.

The UGLY part of this game involved the starting pitcher. When I said the rookies had a huge night I should have clarified it was just the position players, unless you count your era ballooning to be a HUGE night going in the opposite direction. Brad Lincoln was spotted 9 runs count it 9 runs in the first inning! and ended up giving up 7 of his own in only 2.1 innings. This was by far his worst outing of his career and hopefully we don't see any more starts like this one. DJ Carrasco who was the topic of some trade rumors earlier today came in a did a fine job pitching 2.2 innings striking out 5 while allowing 1 walk. Brendan Donnelly allowed a couple of runs late but the back of the bull pen was able to hold down the fort. Meek was solid as usual not much to say there. Joel Hanrahan after allowing a double painted the corners perfectly to strike out the next two batters reaching 97 on the radar gun. Octavio Dotel came in to close down the game striking out the side after allowing one hit.

All in all the game could have been much better from a pitching perspective but the Buccos pulled it out behind Pedro and Neil's enormous games. The Pirates move to 33-60 (22-22 at home) and 3-2 after the all-star break.

Finally A Multi-Run Homer!

Boy, it sure does feel good to write this in this being my first post game story. The Pirates were largely thought to have already chalked up another mark in the loss column with Roy Oswalt starting, however things went a lot different then one may think. The Buccos triumphantly won the game 9-0. The second day of the hit parade started when Pedro Alvarez lined a ball almost directly off of the left ankle of Oswalt. This may have led Oswalt to being slightly ineffective. Alvarez did a nice job at the plate after that single as well with another single off lefty Tim Byrdak. Alvarez finished the day 2-5 almost knocking his 4th home run out of the park. Alvarez has brought his average up to .235, may I say he's finally settling in?

Garrett Jones hit a towering 2-run shot out off of Chris Sampson which ended the abysmal 1,097 at bats without a multi-run homer. Ronny Cedeno working with his new batting stance went 4-4 with 3 doubles. I feel like I'm blabbering on but it was a parade of hits with 19 total. Every starter had at least on hit with the exception of Maholm. Lastings had 2, Jose had 3 raising his average to .269 and Doumit went 3-4 with 2 doubles.

There's not much you can say about the performance by lefty starter Paul Maholm today other than outstanding. Maholm may have only had one strike out but that doesn't mean he was ineffective. There's nothing more you can ask from your starting pitcher especially the day after the bullpen has to pitch 7.2 innings. Maholm was able to work quickly and keep his pitch count down at the same time. This was also the first complete game by a Pirates pitcher this season. The win moves Maholm to 6-7 on the year.

The one down side of this game was the injury to Andrew McCutchen on a diving catch in center field. It appears to be a right shoulder injury. Per Jennifer Langosch it appears to only be stiffness in the neck with additional test being performed. The Pirates move to 32-59 on the year and 2-1 since the all-star break.
Houston Astros (37-54)

At

Pittsburgh Pirates (31-59)

Hou - Roy Oswalt RHP (6-10, 3.08)

Pit - Paul Maholm LHP (5-7, 4.37)

There were many things to love about last nights game and many things that looked about as bad as they could be. Ross Ohlendorf last on 1.1 innings and had really no steady control. What helped the Buccos out most was the opposing pitcher Bud Norris was not much better. Game three of the three game set is today at 1:35 with Roy Oswalt facing off against Paul Maholm. Hopefully the Buccos saved some runs from the offensive explosion yesterday because they'll need them today if they want the chance at taking the series from the Astros.
